Launched by Kanchi, India’s leading luxury home furnishing label, the collection brings their signature of modern elegance to refined interior spaces.

Over 70 years of history is carried in a handpicked Kanchi luxury home furnishing product today. Born out of the textile market in Mumbai, this family legacy found its first beginnings in 1954 in the hands of Harkishandas Mehta. Growing his business trading dress materials and sarees and soon rising to become the president of the Textile Market Association, Mehta expanded his brand –then known as Bharti & Co.– to far-reaching corners of the country. He passed the baton on to his son, Anil, who in the ‘70s branched out under Bharti Enterprise &Kanchi Silks with an independent clientele. In 1999, under Anil’s wife Shobhna and son Kunal’s driving force, the new faction Kanchi tailored its focus on high-end interior furnishings. The brand soon became something of a haute couture house of the home furnishings world. Bespoke and created with utmost care, the seven decade old legacy is carried forward today by the mother and son duo.

Kanchi’s current driving forces mother-son duo, Shobhna and Kunal Mehta, bring with them 25 years of experience in mastering luxury interiors. Shobhna has constructed the couture wardrobes and curated wedding trousseau for Mumbai’s upper-crust. Her refined eye for luxury and detail have found direction in designing the interiors for an elite and distinguished clientele over the years. In 2000, when Kunal set up manufacturing units for embroideries, Shobhna brought her exemplary flair to the family business and took to designing in-house. Now 15 years after its foray into the international European market in the global space, it is their ethos of delivering high-quality accoutrements, which has helped them carve their niche in the field.

The brand that depicts influences from diverse parts of the world, found the origins of its name in Japan. Kunal’s Japanese PROJECT PROFILE June 2021 39 godmother, Hiroko Okita, now 90 years old, fondly named his sister ‘Kanje’, Japanese for ‘someone who hiccups a lot’. The name eventually evolved to become ‘Kanchi’ which in Hindi means beautiful girl. When the time came to name the brand, Kanchi was chosen as an ode to Kunal’s sister and Shobhna’s daughter, and their godmother. The brand’s impressive long list of offerings include bespoke furniture, interior accessories, and luxury fabrics for homes, hotels, and even yachts. The latest in their list of special projects? With this as the backdrop, the luxury home furnishings brand unveils its new collection where the epitome of luxury interiors meets. Presenting DARE 2021, a new collection of home furnishings that melds modern and vintage with an edgy sophistication derived from mid-century 60s splendour. “The idea of creating a bolder and vibrant collection was to emphasise our philosophy of expressing individuality with our designs. We do that by introducing colours that add personality to the home space,” says Kunal Mehta, co-founder and creative of Kanchi. DARE 2021 takes a maximalist approach towards design. Inspired by the mid-century opulence of modern architecture in the 60s and expressionist painter Jackson Pollock’s masterpieces, the colour theory and designs promise to bring an artistic eclecticism to the world of interiors.

The modern cultural references are submerged in the details, across design, cuts and colours. The neutrality of muted tones like taupe and cream is balanced with a flash of vibrant colours and patterns. Also featured in the collection are opulent fabrics with botanical patterns modified to suit the edgy theme and geometric patterns. The message of the collection strives to encourage experimenting with designs and colours to give your interiors a stamp of originality.
