As the name of the collection suggests, the floor surfaces in the Supernova collection feature thin layers of metal sheets, beaten onto pre-textured & previously carved shaped sections of stone.
The desired form – starburst pattern – is first hand-carved on the base material (natural stone). Using a handheld hammer, (known as mogri in India), master artisans delicately beat metal sheets-brass, copper, aluminum, or white metal onto the stone, and then tuck them under the surface by hand. For the final touch, randomly selected areas of the metal are antiqued very slightly to create an attractive “reclaimed” look. Orvis Surfaces merged the principles of design & artisanship to create the Supernova collection. Objects from the collection reflect the brand’s core value, that of bridging the gap between the artisans at the grassroots level and the urban consumers.
