“The Yellow House expertly balances tradition and modernity, resulting in a tranquil retreat honouring Goa’s rich architectural legacy while providing sustainable, contemporary luxury.” —- Morphogenesis.

The Yellow House, a restored Portuguese bungalow in North Goa, blends traditional heritage and modern hospitality. Goa’s architectural legacy, which includes vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and decorative mouldings, reflects the region’s rich history and the “Susegad” philosophy—a tranquil, nature-connected lifestyle. This ethos inspired the bungalow’s transformation into a modern resort while retaining its original charm.

The design concept aimed to promote social interaction while preserving cultural integrity. A spa to the east and a modern wing with suites to the west were thoughtfully included. The driveway winds through the spa and leads to the villa’s entrance. The redesigned courtyard, which includes communal seating around a central tree, is now used as an extended waiting lounge. The reception, restaurant, bar, and bakery are all located within the villa, while alfresco dining areas seamlessly connect to the pool and landscaped grounds.

The suite layouts include private gardens and balconies with lush green views, while deluxe rooms on the southern edge have outdoor Jacuzzis and flexible seating options. The site planning emphasises minimal excavation while preserving existing trees, including an ancient symbol of endurance. Sustainable practices include using local materials, restoring historical elements, and incorporating Goan motifs to ensure the villa remains a tribute to the region’s heritage.

Adaptive reuse required only minor structural changes, transforming three spacious bedrooms into luxurious suites. The guestroom block, which is oriented to capture northern light, provides maximum comfort. The bar’s trussed roof, now a lush green hue, and the preserved ornamental mouldings maintain historical continuity. Handcrafted terrazzo tiles with geometric motifs and restored terracotta roof tiles add visual interest.

Materials and craftsmanship highlight local culture, while rattan screens and bespoke furniture add a tropical flair. Public spaces have vibrant colours, whereas private rooms have calming blues, greens, and yellows. Mirrored walls in the dining area add depth, while custom brass-finished lamps create a cosy atmosphere. Jaali patterns and handcrafted terrazzo tiles in the guestroom corridors exude artisanal elegance.
