Villa by the Backwaters crafted by Studio TAB is more than just a dwelling; it is a timeless haven that reflects the essence of Kerala’s natural beauty while providing a retreat that transcends generations.
In the heart of Kochi, Kerala, a project named “Villa by the Backwaters” stands as a testament to the seamless integration of traditional charm and modern functionality. Completed in February 2020, this pocket-sized plot exudes a larger-than-life aura, nestled between dense palm trees and the serene backwaters of Varapuzha.
The client’s vision was clear: a retreat that not only served as a holiday home for a globetrotting family but also provided a tranquil haven for septuagenarian parents seeking an enriched retired life. The site, with its idyllic surroundings of local fishermen, wooden canoes, and the soothing symphony of seagulls, offered a perfect canvas for the realisation of this dream.
From the outset, the design concept embraced the context in which it was situated. A meticulous climatic study aimed to minimise reliance on artificial thermal comfort, while a commitment to local materials and craftsmanship brought authenticity to the project. The guiding principle was a contextually driven design, celebrating all things natural and local, a retreat from urban living, where aesthetics met sustainability, and form harmonised with function.
The design process spanned four months of intensive research, delving into the local materials, engaging with artisans, and exploring the historic Mattancherry market. The objective was to create a design that transcended time, rooted in the rich heritage of the region. Local artisans played a pivotal role in shaping laterite blocks, crafting lime-plastered walls, and recreating ancestral furniture with contemporary comforts.
To add a touch of nostalgia, the team sourced old woodwork from dilapidated houses in and around Kochi, salvaging and restoring it within the project. The result is a villa that stands as a modern ode to the bygone era, where every element tells a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
