Crafting a home that harmonises with nature while exemplifying refined design principles is both an art and a challenge. For Ar. Snehal Shah and Ar. Saloni Shah, the founding Partner of EssTeam, with a portfolio boasting 500 buildings over fifteen years, the pinnacle of this challenge was realised in creating a personal haven, a villa nestled within a gated private community in suburban Surat.
Spanning a generous 1,500 square meters, the villa’s design revolves around creating a residence in synchrony with the principles of nature. Divided by four C-shaped walls, two facing north and two facing south, the property forms three distinct courtyards, each serving a unique purpose. The northern block, a private enclave, houses four equal-sized bedrooms, two on each floor, overlooking a formal lawn and communal spaces such as the living room, hobby room, dining room, and kitchen.
Central to the design philosophy is the Centre Court, a substantial programmed area serving as the heart of the home, facilitating seamless interaction between the interiors and the exterior. The architectural finesse lies in the deliberate use of sustainable materials, particularly natural teak wood, unifying the bedroom designs and echoing a commitment to eco-friendly living.
The villa’s interior decor manifests artistic inspiration, with furnishings meticulously crafted from solid wood featuring detailed joineries. Drawing influence from renowned artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Paul Klee, Vincent Van Gogh, and S. H. Raza, the bedroom decor is an ode to creativity, with Batik-inspired designs and elements from the works of Jaimini Roy infusing authenticity and depth.
The villa is recognised with a prestigious Platinum rating in the IGBC Green Homes category as a testament to sustainable living. Yet, in the ever-evolving design world, the journey towards creating even more refined and environmentally conscious spaces continues, as the villa serves not just as a dwelling but as a living canvas embodying the principles of balance and elegance.
