In every stroke of design, we aimed not just for a home but for a symphony of harmonies, where Mondrian’s art breathes life into every corner, creating a unique canvas for living.
Uniifyy, the design firm in Central Park, Gurugram, has skillfully crafted a duplex apartment that serves as a living canvas, weaving together the unique passions of a German graduate who deeply appreciates Piet Mondrian’s art and diverse artefacts worldwide. Rejecting a specific design style, the architects Asish Batra & Kavita Batra made Piet Mondrian’s iconic art the focal point, resulting in a home seamlessly transitioning between traditional, contemporary, and abstract design elements.
The duplex embraces solid forms and geometries inspired by Mondrian’s belief in underlying mathematical structures. The spatial design echoes the artist’s abstract paintings, featuring flat planes of blues and oranges and strong horizontal and vertical elements. The interaction between the client’s preferences, technology, and local culture is evident, creating spaces that stimulate creativity while optimising natural light for everyday activities.
With a two-level layout, the lower level houses the public areas like the living room, office, and guest bedroom, while the upper level provides a more private space with a music area, lounge, master bedroom, and kitchen. The design cleverly incorporates outdoor spaces with planters, inviting residents to step outside. A spacious terrace on the upper level enhances this experience, offering a place for relaxation and conversation.
Entering the apartment, the living room stands out as a mini-museum, showcasing contemporary art, antiques, and curios. The design achieves a delicate balance between functionality and intricacy, humility and bespoke elements, all while radiating a sense of harmony and minimalism. Both bedrooms continue this theme, with the guest bedroom embracing bright colours and artistic patterns and the master bedroom opting for subdued shades and simple patterns with marble flooring.
The accomplished design prioritises aesthetics, minimises intervention, and reduces the use of materials with a significant carbon footprint. Low-VOC paints, sustainably sourced birch plywood, and marble are the primary materials, showcasing a commitment to environmental sustainability. The home combines diverse elements, providing a harmonious aesthetic that seamlessly merges classic and contemporary themes, offering a timeless and comfortable living space. This home becomes a vibrant representation of the inhabitants’ personalities, cultures, and lifestyles, embodying a fusion of Mondrian’s artistry with modern living.
